70 years since the Bouncing Bomb…and we use the same machinery to make jukeboxes

chris and lathe

We have had somewhat of a media frenzy here over the past few days with reporters wielding cameras, video cameras and microphones all over the place. The reason for all this activity is that today is the 70th anniversary of one of the RAF’s most daring missions – The famous Dam Busters raid carried out by 617 squadron based at Scampton in Lincoln.

The reason for the interest with Sound Leisure is that 3 years ago we acquired a local business, Dawsons pattern works, founded in 1915 by Thomas Dawson and subsequently owned and run by several generations of the Dawson Family. In 2010 after 95 years of family ownership, John Dawson retired and with no other family member remaining to take the reigns of the company we brought it under the Sound Leisure umbrella with the intention of continuing the name, skills and heritage that Dawsons had built up over the years.Since becoming part of our family the Dawson division has become an integral part of our businesses and we supply many bespoke patterns, tooling and furniture to a wide range of customers over a wide sector.

One of the items of machinery that we purchased with the acquisition, and that is causing the press interest is a lathe that was manufactured approximately 100 years ago and was installed by the M.O.D in the Dawsons factory in Leeds to aid the development of a top secret prototype. This project later turned out to be the bouncing bomb that was later used on the mission to destroy the Mohne, Sorp and Eder dams and has since been credited with drastically reducing the length of the war effort.

Barnes Wallis, the engineer that designed the bomb received a Knighthood in 1968, which in part was attributed to this development. Described by his family as “a man of peace rather than a man of war”, we are sure that Barnes would be happy to see the lathe being used for much happier and friendlier manufacturing purposes than it was used for in the past.lathe (1 of 1)

They Made It!

944992_581799835187118_145368742_n

photoWell we made it and thanks to all the generous support Mike and I managed to raise just short of £3000. Over all, the 298 cyclists that took part have raised an estimated £300,000. We had great weather for most of the ride, other than on Friday when we had an 18 mph head wind which made the climb up to Sutton Bank (check it out) rather strenuous. We finally arrived in Huddersfield on Saturday morning to a crowd of over 21,000 people which was a fantastic experience. I am pleased to report that we suffered no injuries this year, the only casualty was my phone which I dropped on the start line on day one. I wasn’t too happy but the rest of my team seemed really pleased! Thanks everyone, we can’t wait for next year.

It is 6 years ago that we first shipped a Sound Leisure Melody jukebox to the Jukebox Gallery in Leerdam, Holland. We were looking for a partner in the Netherlands who we felt had the same commitment to quality and service as ourselves, and after much discussion, an agreement was signed making them our official distributors for the Benelux countries. Since then, the relationship has grown and is highlighted by the fantastic display of Sound Leisure products that are now displayed in the Gallery’s recently modernised showroom.

As the images portray, the showroom contains a mixture of new retro products with the full range of Sound Leisure jukeboxes and speakers, together with beautifully restored original classic machines, and a dazzling array of diner furnishings. We thank our friends at Jukebox Gallery, and look forward to continuing our special relationship for many years to come.

Go Danny!

P1060317

Danny McGuire called into see us earlier in the week, prior to tonight’s World Club challenge against Melbourne Storm. Leeds and Melbourne have met three times in the last 5 years and if Leeds manage to win tonight they will hold the record for the number of times a club has taken the title of World Champions. As seems to be the norm when a UK team plays the Aussies, Leeds go into the final as the underdogs, but as all fellow rugby league supporters know, being the underdog suits Leeds just fine.

Here’s hoping for a Classic outcome – we will all be screaming for Danny and the Rhinos!

Congratulations!

Jason in the booth

It’s been a week of celebration this week. We had a fantastic week at the ICE exhibition at eXcel in London showcasing our range of Classic and digital machines to the Casino industry. In addition a few members of our team have also had cause to celebrate. Mathew Lodge has completed and passed his “advanced level apprenticeship in making and repairing hand crafted furniture and furnishings.” As each of our jukebox cabinets are hand crafted to exacting standards this is a high achievement and one that has taken a lot of effort. Mathew joined Sound Leisure as an apprentice in July 2008 works alongside his mum and two of his uncles.

Factory Manager, Shaun Smith, who began work at Sound Leisure in March 1987 celebrated his 50th birthday this week and Jason Stevenson, who works in our woodworking division french polishing and spraying, proposed to his girlfriend and she accepted! Jason started at Sound Leisure in june 2006. A big congratulations goes out to them all!
